Junk removal is simple in concept: someone shows up with a truck, loads what you don’t want, and hauls it away. The details, like how it’s priced, what they’ll take, and where it ends up, are where it pays to know a little more. We connect Ventura County residents with independent local haulers for jobs of every size.

What junk removal covers

  • Household clutter: boxes, old toys, broken furniture, exercise equipment, rugs
  • Furniture: couches, sectionals, mattresses, dressers, desks (see furniture removal)
  • Appliances: fridges, washers, dryers, water heaters (see appliance removal)
  • Garage and shed cleanouts: years of accumulated storage
  • Yard debris: branches, old fencing, patio furniture, planters
  • Renovation leftovers: cabinets, carpet, drywall scraps, doors (non-hazardous)
  • Whole-home cleanouts: move-outs, rentals, and estates (see estate cleanouts)

How pricing usually works

Most haulers price by volume: how much of the truck your items fill. You’ll often see pricing by fractions of a load. Other factors:

  • Weight. Dense materials such as concrete, dirt, roofing, and tile are heavy and may have weight limits or separate pricing.
  • Special handling. Refrigerant-containing appliances, mattresses, tires, and electronics may carry extra fees because of disposal rules.
  • Access. Stairs, long carries, and tight spaces add labor.
  • Disposal costs. Transfer station and landfill fees are built into the price.

A reliable provider will give you a price before loading starts and explain anything that might change it. Photos help a lot for estimates.

What haulers typically won’t take

Hazardous materials like paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil, propane tanks, and asbestos are usually excluded. In California, electronics, batteries, and fluorescent lamps can’t go in the regular trash, so haulers who take them must recycle them properly. Our guide to what junk haulers can’t take explains where those items should go.

Where your junk goes

Responsible haulers sort loads. Usable furniture and household goods may be donated. Metal, cardboard, and some electronics are recycled. The rest goes to transfer stations and landfills that serve Ventura County. Green waste may be taken to composting facilities. If donation or recycling matters to you, ask the provider how they handle it.

Getting ready for pickup

  • Group items together if you can, but don’t hurt yourself moving heavy things.
  • Mark anything that should not go.
  • Tell the provider about stairs, gate codes, parking limits, or HOA rules.
  • Separate hazardous items so they don’t end up in the load.

Local considerations

Older neighborhoods in Ventura, Oxnard, and Santa Paula often have narrow driveways and alleys that affect truck access. Hillside homes in Thousand Oaks, Ojai, and Oak View may have long carries or steep driveways. HOAs in Camarillo, Moorpark, Westlake Village, and elsewhere may limit truck parking or hours. Mention these details up front.

Frequently asked questions

How do junk removal companies price jobs?

Most price by truck volume, often in fractions of a load, with possible surcharges for heavy materials or special items. Some offer single-item pricing. Get the final price confirmed before loading.

Can I just point and have them take everything?

Usually, yes. Full-service junk removal crews do the lifting and loading from wherever items are, within safety limits.

What about my city's bulky item pickup?

Many Ventura County cities and trash haulers offer bulky item collection for residents, sometimes a few times a year. It's worth checking first for a couple of large items. Private haulers help when you have more, need it sooner, or need items carried out of the house.

Do haulers take yard waste?

Many do, including branches, clippings, and old landscaping materials. Soil, rock, and concrete are heavy and may be priced differently.
